Cooking has become one most important part in our daily lives since the discovery of fire. Our ancestors gathered around the fire and cooked for others in the family/ tribe/ village. Cooking has become an effective means for us to communicate and share love with those around. In the deeper meaning of cooking/food, we may easily realize that aside from the look, the taste, and the energy it brings upon work in our daily lives, it also carries greater values emotionally and spiritually.

Food As Powerful Mean to Fulfill Human’s Psychological and Basic Needs.

Food prepared with food safety in mind fulfills both our physiological and safety needs, which are two of the most basic needs of humans. In transcendence of the basic bodily needs towards our higher needs in emotion and mental, food/cooking being enjoyed together with people around us in and through love brings upon strong relationships, bondings, belongingness, and unity among families and friends. These psychological needs may be fulfilled through the moments of love sharing, communication/ bonding and exchange of emotion with our family and friends.

The host who prepared the food shared his/her love through food and is also blessed with joy and sense of abundance by being a provider, and also the sense of accomplishment because of being of service to others. Though food may not be easily seen as a direct aid in one’s growth towards Self Actualization, which involves one’s growth spiritually and in awareness and consciousness, food indeed greatly helped in securing the psychological and basic needs which forms a strong base/support for our further growth towards Self Actualization.

Though not the main topic today, we are going to extend a little into how teaching children to cook can greatly help them in growth, much more than we think of it simply as a technical skill, but also growth in these aspects:Physical/ technical/ nutritional teachings Learn to eat healthily learn prioritization structural thinking Chemistry Thermodynamics food nutritionPsychological teachings Learn gratitude bond with parents integrate taste with memories love and of service to others

Physical/ technical/ nutritional teachings

  • Learn to eat healthily
  • learn prioritization
  • structural thinking
  • Chemistry
  • Thermodynamics
  • food nutrition

Psychological teachings

  • Learn gratitude
  • bond with parents
  • integrate taste with memories
  • love and of service to others

Parents show by example that cooking at home does not only teach the children only as a life skill, it also shows them the importance of eating healthy. By involving children in preparation of food, children can learn about the types of food, their nutritional values, and thus what should go into our food for us to be eating healthily. With these values being taught to the children from a young age, these values and ideas form the base of their understanding about food and will certainly grow and be of great help to the children’s growth.

Besides, children’s involvement in preparation of food also teaches math and science (chemistry, thermodynamics, and food science). Children learn about the senses of ratios, precisions (thickness/weight/volume), time duration, heat levels, and other mathematical and physical senses through cooking. These senses greatly help the children’s growth in an objective mind. Structural thinking and priorities can also be learned by the children through steps in food preparation and cooking.

Psychologically, cooking helps the children in developing the sense of gratitude, the willingness to be of service and love for others, receiving love from the parents through the bonding time, and lastly integrate these love with the taste of good. Involving children in food preparation from a young age can develop their sense of gratitude towards food and the preparer. Food/ taste being integrated with memories can easily be realized when one’s childhood memory is subconsciously recalled when one consumes a food that tastes similar to that of mum’s cooking. The taste of home cooked food carries valuable memories with it.

This article may cover only the tip of an iceberg about home cooking and its learning/ teaching to children. However, we wish that it may serve you as a stepping stone in realization of the power of home cooking thus continuing to research, learn and advance and teach it to the people we love. We bid you and family well in love!
